Basic steps for good brazing

STEP Nº1 METAL CLEAN UP

It's essential that the parts to be brazed be very clean, with no dust, oil, paint, or rust. A good capillary action is likely to occur only on clean surfaces allowing the alloy in liquid state to flow by itself all over the separation. For instance, pollutants such as oxides prevent the alloy from having a good capillary action. Their presence increases the surface tension of the liquefied filler metal, decreasing its wetting.

For grease, oil and paint removal and elimination some fluxes can be used such as Trichlorethylene, Carbon Tetrachloride, or alkaline cleansers such as Caustic or Potash Soda.

For oxides or laminated scales, rust removing chemicals such as Chloride or Sulfuric Acid diluted at 10% are recommended only if they are compatible with the chemical composition of the base metals.

Other good alternatives are mechanical cleaning methods such as sand, file, or emery
